DEPARTMENT L
HORSE SHOW

Email:  horses@berkeleycountyyouthfair.org
Judge: TBA
Wednesday, August 7, 2024 – Western and Gaited Discipline Horse Show
Thursday, August 8, 2024 – English and Walk-Jog/Trot Discipline Horse Show

Acceptance of the following rules is a condition of entry. If a horse is not owned by the exhibitor, a BCYF livestock lease form must be completed and signed by exhibitor and livestock owner and turned into BCYF by July 1st.  Dates must run through Saturday, August 10, 2024

***Project horse must be housed at the BCYF, Saturday, August 3, 2024, through Friday, August 9, 2024 – release time is from 6 am until 10 am

  1. Horse must be designated as the project as of March 15, 2024.
  2. All horses must have a negative Coggins Test, within one year, presented at check-in.
  3. 4-H and USEF rules apply unless otherwise stated. 4-H rules take precedence.
  4. All exhibitors are required to wear an ASTM and SEI-approved headgear, with harness secured, when mounted.
  5. Closed-toe shoes must be worn when handling a horse.
  6. Exhibitors riding western style should wear proper western attire (jeans, belt, long-sleeve shirt, boots, and hat). Exhibitors riding English style should wear proper English attire (britches, collared shirt, jacket, boots, and hat). Exhibitors showing in the gaited division should wear appropriate attire for their style.
  7. Unless otherwise stated, classes will be judged on performance, manners, way of going, and suitability, with emphasis on manners. Equitation will be judged on seating, hands, control, and effective use of aids by the rider.
  8. The use of riding aids will follow 4-H and AQHA guidelines. Riding crops used in front of the saddle and humane, discipline-appropriate spurs used behind the cinch are acceptable. Dressage-style whips are not acceptable. Lounge whips are only allowed when working in the round pen.
  9. After 3 refusals of any obstacle, the exhibitor must move on to the next obstacle.
  10. Riders can only ride in the arena and must dismount before exiting. In the Contest Division, no running of the gate/chute will be allowed.
  11. No stallions, except for nursing colts under six months of age, are allowed.
  12. No halters are to be left on the horse while in the stall or round pen, but halters and lead ropes should be easily accessible on the outside of the stall. No stall guards are allowed unless the exhibitor is present at the stall door.
  13. Show committee reserves the right to combine and/or cancel classes.
  14. All exhibitors are required to enter a Showmanship class with the animal that is housed at the fair to complete their project.
  15. Horses are required to stay in the designated barn/arena area at all times and may only be ridden in the arena, equipped with saddle and bridle.
  16. No one is to ride the horse on the fairgrounds except the designated exhibitor.
  17. All animals must be in stalls by 5:00 pm each day. The horse barn closes at 11:00 pm.
  18. The judge’s decisions are final.
  19. The Berkeley County Youth Fair, 4-H, FFA, or any of its volunteers will not be responsible for any accidents, injury, or loss of any exhibitor, person, horse, or equipment during the fair week.
  20. Good sportsmanship shall prevail at all times. Unsportsmanlike conduct will result in the forfeiture of premiums and the dismissal of the exhibitor from further competition in the show.
  21. Only Berkeley County Youth Fair awards (banners, trophies, ribbons, etc.) may be hung or displayed in the horse barn area.
  22. Only one fan per animal is allowed.
  23. Announcements made prior to the day of the show take precedence over written material.
  24. Two horses may be exhibited, housed and shown at the fair. For clarification, the Brandy Orsini Memorial Belt Buckles for High Point Junior and Senior will be based on points accumulated for an exhibitor/horse combination.  An exhibitor showing two horses in different divisions will only be able to accumulate points with one horse for the High Point awards; points accumulated on the two horses will not be combined for High Point awards.  However, both horses would be eligible for division Grand and Reserve awards.
  25. Fair Board reserves the right to have any exhibitor and their animals removed from the fairgrounds without liability during the fair for cause (including, but not limited to, threatening behavior, intoxication, or unsportsmanlike conduct).
  26. Registration for classes must be turned in no later than Sunday, August 4th at 12:00 noon.  There are no exceptions – classes after this date and time will not be changed for add-ons but scratching classes will be permitted up to and including on show day.

Round Robin Showmanship Contest

Round Robin Master Showmanship Contest

6:00 pm
Indoor Arena

  1. In order to qualify for this event, the exhibitor must participate in the Round Robin Preliminary class. This class will be held after the Overall showmanship champion class.
  2. The Previous Winner and Overall Showman will compete in the Round Robin Preliminary class. If an exhibitor chooses not to participate, they must inform the chairperson immediately.
  3. If there is no Previous Winner for a species the Overall Showmanship Winner will automatically advance to the Round Robin Showmanship.
  4. If an exhibitor wins Round Robin Preliminary in more than one species, they may select the species they wish to represent. The other species will be represented by the next eligible exhibitor in the other species according to the order of eligibility as noted in #11.
  5. Once the exhibitor has won the Round Robin Showmanship Contest, they become ineligible for future Round Robin Showmanship competition but may continue to compete in his/her respective showmanship division.
  6. Contestants rotate among beef, dairy, sheep, swine, and goat to judge their abilities with an animal other than the species that earned them the Champion Showman. Contestants must show all (5) species of livestock.
  7. The judge will use a numerical scoring system to grade each individual in each species, with the ultimate winner determined by the total score over all species.
  8. In the event of a tie, the scores obtained by the affected individuals will be thrown out in the species they qualified in. If this does not break the tie, the judge will proceed to ask the qualifying individuals a question to break the tie. The judge will make the final decision of which individual answered the question the best.
  9. The Livestock Committee will be responsible for selecting animals to be used in the competition. Only one animal species will be in the ring at a time. Contestants in the Round Robin Showmanship event cannot show their own animal. Animals will be selected from non-market animals if possible.
  10. This contest is not only fun, but it serves as an educational tool introducing exhibitors to various species of animals and the showmanship skills needed to properly show their animal and be competitive.
  11. Order of eligibility is the winner of the Round Robin Preliminary, followed by the Previous Winner, then the placing order in the Overall Championship Class (Senior, Intermediate, Junior) as placed by the judge. If an exhibitor is still not selected, that species will not compete.
